The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will launch a task force to develop the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) City' as part of the new government's national agenda.
On the 5th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will hold a kickoff meeting for the AI City task force.
This task force will include relevant departments such as urban planning, architecture, spatial information, and mobility, as well as organizations like the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), Architecture & Urban Research Institute (AURI), The Korea Transport Institute (KOTI), Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH), and Korea Land and Geospatial InformatiX Corporation (LX).
The AI City is a futuristic city that applies AI to city administration and services beyond existing smart cities. Previous smart city projects focused on implementing various urban services that enhance citizen convenience, such as bus information systems and urban integration centers (CCTV), and on collecting various urban data. However, the AI City aims to leverage AI based on urban data to predict and solve urban issues related to traffic, energy, and safety in advance, providing personalized services to each citizen across various fields.
At its first meeting, the task force will discuss strategies for establishing the AI City project and the development of demonstration cities, encompassing urban planning, architecture, spatial information, and transportation. Various opinions on the government's policy direction in light of recent changes in AI technology are expected to be exchanged.
To align with the AI transformation (AX·AI Transformation), the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to push forward with the 'AI City development' as a national agenda to lead the global AI market and enhance the quality of life for citizens. To this end, a budget of 4 billion won has been allocated in next year's government budget for selecting AI-specialized demonstration cities and establishing project plans.
Lee Sang-joo, head of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Urban Policy Division, noted, 'The AI City is a new future city model that goes beyond the simple introduction of technology, where artificial intelligence (AI) proactively conducts urban planning and operations, revolutionizing citizens' lives.' He added, 'We will swiftly produce results so that citizens can feel the impact and realize the vision of a Korea-style AI City.'
