Seoul Metropolitan Government has begun a project to bury the eastern road along the Tancheon stream. It is expected that traffic volume in the southeastern region of Seoul will be dispersed.
On the 13th, Seoul City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 'Tancheon Stream Eastern Road Improvement Project' at Soonae Park in Munjeong-dong, Songpa District. More than 100 people attended the ceremony, including Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Songpa District Office head Seo Kang-seok, local members of the National Assembly, city and district council members, construction officials, and local residents.
The project aims to improve the road structure by burying approximately 4.9 km of the section from the north end of the Samsung Bridge to the Dongnamro Intersection. Its goal is to respond to traffic demand arising from large-scale development in the southeastern region of Seoul and to secure a diversion function for the Dongbumgansun Road and Songpa Road.
Section 1 (Gwangpyeong Bridge Intersection to Dongnamro Intersection, 0.6 km) is planned to open in the second half of 2029. Section 2 (North end of Samsung Bridge to Gwangpyeong Bridge Intersection, 4.3 km) is scheduled to proceed in phases after basic and detailed design starting in the second half of this year.
Section 1 will integrate areas where the embankment road and lower road are separated and improve the ineffectively designed Gwangpyeong Bridge Intersection to reduce the risk of traffic accidents and facilitate vehicle flow.
Currently, the upper embankment road and lower road are operated separately, and the structure of the Gwangpyeong Bridge intersection is irregular, making it a frequent site of traffic accidents. This project plans to create an underpass with six lanes in both directions to enhance safety. Above the underpass, a 'Green Ecological Path' will be created, connecting to the Tancheon stream, allowing citizens to enjoy walking, views, and relaxation.
Once the improvement project is completed, connectivity between Tancheon Road and Dongnam Road will increase, and traffic volume concentrated on the Dongbumgansun Road and Songpa Road is expected to be dispersed, alleviating local traffic congestion, according to Seoul City.
During the construction period, Seoul City plans to install temporary detours along the Tancheon stream to minimize traffic congestion. However, the adjustment of the number of lanes is unavoidable, and residents using the area are urged to understand and cooperate.
Mayor Oh said, 'The opening of the eastern road along Tancheon stream will not only alleviate traffic bottlenecks on nearby roads but also allow vehicles to run more smoothly due to reduced traffic volume. Above all, a green ecological path will be created where citizens can walk leisurely and feel the water flow and breeze, improving the walking environment and allowing for a more relaxed everyday life.'
