A survey has revealed that more than half of households living on monthly rent are unaware of the tax credit benefits available for rent payments. Samjeomsam Research Lab released these survey results on the 13th. The survey was conducted from June 9 to 27, targeting 465 individuals with a total salary of 80 million won or less who have actual experience renting.
55.5% of respondents indicated that they were unaware of the tax credit benefits for rent payments. Additionally, 57.4% of respondents did not know the eligibility requirements for the tax credit.
Only 37.6% of respondents reported having experience receiving the tax credit for rent payments. 55.1% indicated that they had never received the tax credit.
Samjeomsam Research Lab emphasized that while there are various qualifying requirements related to the tax credit for rent payments, including total salary, standard market price, eligible amount for tax credits, and tax credit rates, merely relaxing quantitative criteria has limitations in resolving blind spots. For instance, 89% of workers completing year-end tax settlements fall under the total salary of 80 million won, meaning that raising the threshold would not yield significant benefits.
Accordingly, it was suggested to expand the system focused on individuals with real rent burdens, convert the judgment criteria for housing into the rent payment period, and clarify the requirements for the standard market price in order to alleviate the housing cost burden for renters, which is the original purpose of the system.
