On the 5th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will hold a design competition for the second Sejong Cultural Center to be established in Yeouido Park.
This design competition will take place for the five winning teams from the design competition held in 2023. The participating teams are ▲Park Hyeong-il (Beome Architecture & Engineering) ▲Oh Ho-geun (Design Camp Moon Park DMP) ▲Jeong Young-kyun (Heerim Architects & Planners) ▲Patrick Schumacher from the UK (Zaha Hadid Architects) ▲Jean-Pierre Durig from Switzerland (DURIG AG).
The second Sejong Cultural Center is a key project of the 'Great Han River Project' announced in 2023. The goal is to create a global urban complex cultural space with a total floor area of 66,000 square meters focused on culture and arts performance halls. The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to implement a space that revitalizes the location connecting the Han River and Yeouido Park, enhancing its symbolism and attractiveness as a waterfront cultural center.
It will be filled with cultural infrastructure including a grand auditorium (1,800 seats), a medium auditorium (800 seats), exhibition spaces (5,670 square meters), and educational facilities. The project budget includes a design cost of 22.2 billion won and a construction cost of 401.4 billion won, with the aim of starting construction in December 2026 and completing it by December 2029.
On November 4, the announcement of participating teams will be broadcast live, and the evaluation process will be made public. Subsequently, the participating works will be exhibited at the Sejong Lounge on the first floor of the Sejong Cultural Center. The final winning team will be designated as the preferred negotiation target for performing design services, and upon contract signing, they will carry out basic and detailed design services for 14 months.
Jo Nam-jun, head of the Urban Space Headquarters of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "Through the design competition for the second Sejong Cultural Center, we expect to see a high-quality design proposal that will serve as a cultural platform that naturally blends into citizens' daily lives and provides quality cultural services, as well as a symbolic space that will elevate Seoul's cultural status globally."
