President Lee Jae-myung will announce a statement from POSCO E&C that includes an apology and measures to prevent the recurrence of frequent industrial accident fatalities.
According to the construction industry on the 29th, CEO Jeong Hee-min of POSCO E&C will deliver a statement regarding the fatal accident issue at 5 p.m. at the company's headquarters in Songdo, Incheon.
The statement is expected to include an apology for the deaths of workers due to several serious accidents at POSCO E&C construction sites this year, a commitment to actively cooperate with government investigations, and a promise to further strengthen safety management on site.
Earlier, President Lee Jae-myung mentioned during a government meeting on the morning of the same day that workers had died in a series of industrial accidents at POSCO E&C sites this year, and criticized, "The fact that fatal accidents continue in the same manner ultimately means tolerating death, and to put it more harshly, it could be termed as murder by reckless negligence in legal terms."
The day before, a worker in his 60s died after getting caught in a drill (a construction machine that penetrates the ground) while working on slope reinforcement at the Uiryeong Interchange construction site of the Gyeongnam-Hamyang-Ulsan Expressway being constructed by POSCO E&C.
Earlier this year, there were four serious accidents at POSCO E&C construction sites that resulted in the deaths of four people, including a fall accident at an apartment construction site in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, in January, a collapse accident at the Shin-Ansan Line construction site in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi, in April, and a fall accident at a high-rise mixed-use construction site in Daegu.
