Samsung E&A announced on the 15th that it will participate in the region's first biodegradable plastic production project in the Middle East.
On the 14th (local time), Samsung E&A signed a contract with Emirates Biotech, a global bio corporation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), regarding the 'Falcon Biodegradable Plastic Project' Pre-EPC (EPC pre-work).
With this contract, Samsung E&A will carry out basic design and EPC budget estimation tasks. The contract ceremony, held at the headquarters of Emirates Biotech in the UAE, was attended by top executives from both companies, including Namkoong Hong, president of Samsung E&A, and Marc Verbruggen, president of Emirates Biotech.
The plant being constructed in the Khalifa Economic Zone (KEZAD) of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, will be the region's first environmentally friendly plastic production facility, producing 80,000 tons (t) of biodegradable plastic (PLA) annually.
Biodegradable plastic is an environmentally friendly plastic made from raw materials extracted from corn, sugar cane, and others, and it is gaining attention for its ability to decompose easily in nature if certain conditions are met, unlike conventional plastics.
With this order win, Samsung E&A has made its first entry into the field of environmentally friendly plastics, where demand is increasing due to global environmental regulations, while also securing new customers.
In 2023, Samsung E&A announced its future vision to become an engineering corporation that realizes a better future with advanced technology, and proposed 'a corporation that solves social challenges with technology' as one of its core strategies for achieving this vision during the energy transition.
