A total of 1,606 minors were tallied as having earned more than 20 million won a year from interest and dividends.
According to data the National Tax Service submitted to the office of Rep. Moon Jin-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee, on the 13th, 1,606 minors reported financial income when filing their 2024 comprehensive income.
Filing comprehensive income means their annual financial income, such as interest and dividends, exceeded 20 million won. The numbers of minors who filed comprehensive income were 1,327 in 2021, 1,395 in 2022, and 1,461 in 2023. It has increased for three consecutive years.
The amount of income reported by minors in 2024 was 166.91 billion won. The average per person was 104 million won. By age, there were 122 aged 5 or younger, 424 aged 6–11, 376 aged 12–14, 489 aged 15–17, and 195 aged 18.
Rep. Moon Jin-seok said, "The fact that minors earn tens of millions of won in financial income is the result of the asset of the parent generation being passed down," adding, "There is a need to strengthen the National Tax Service's post-management of advance gifts and borrowed-name assets under minors' names."
