The Democratic Party of Korea Seoul Metropolitan Chapter's special committee on dwelling supply policy said there was an opinion that, to stabilize housing for young people and newlyweds, youth-affordable dwellings should be continuously supplied by using sites around Yongsan Park such as Camp Kim, semi-industrial zones in Seoul, and lifting greenbelt restrictions.
The Democratic Party Seoul Metropolitan Chapter's special committee on dwelling supply held a "policy forum on housing for young people and newlyweds" at the National Assembly on the morning of the 10th and discussed the status of dwelling supply in Seoul and housing measures for young people.
Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Nam-geun met with reporters right after the meeting and said, "The theme was how to supply youth dwellings that are affordable," and noted, "For that to happen, there is a need to secure public housing sites." Kim added, "Yeongdeungpo has the most, about 6 million pyeong, in semi-industrial zones," and explained, "Because sites in Seoul are losing their function as industrial complexes, there was talk of supplying a large amount for residential use."
A proposal also emerged to use returned sites around Yongsan Park as public housing sites. Citing a case where the United Nations Command site was sold to the private sector and developed, Kim said, "An officetel is about 8 billion won," and pointed out, "Isn't there a lot of problems with doing it this way?" Kim then said, "There was a proposal that the public sector develop and supply youth dwellings that young people can afford." The idea is that the supply of so-called "scattered sites" outside the park—such as the Transportation Corps site and Camp Kim—should be carried out through public development.
There was also an opinion that sites included within Yongsan Park but already stripped of park functions should be actively reviewed. Kim said, "The No. 5 officers' barracks complex is adjacent to a dwelling zone below the park and is also connected to Seobinggo Station," and added, "Wouldn't it be meaningful to develop it into youth dwellings in a station area?" Kim also said, "Sites already being used for residential purposes, such as the No. 4 officers' barracks complex, the noncommissioned officers' site, and military apartments, can be developed independently and used as youth dwellings."
Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Young-bae urged discussions such as lifting greenbelt restrictions to supply dwellings. Kim said, "I would like you to focus on the urgent discussion of whether to supply dwellings even by lifting greenbelts." Kim added, "I plan to propose policy consultations with the Seoul Metropolitan Government."
