President Lee Jae-myung said on the 8th that efforts for peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity on the Korean Peninsula will continue unwaveringly through trust and dialogue based on firm deterrence.
Lee said this in a video congratulatory address at the Seoul Defense Dialogue (SDD) held at The Lotte Grand in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the day, saying that Korea is broadening the horizon of dialogue for peace and prosperity through mutual respect and cooperation, based on independent defense capabilities.
Marking its 15th year, the Seoul Defense Dialogue is a high-level multilateral security forum hosted by the Ministry of National Defense since 2012 to contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula and enhance regional security cooperation.
This year's theme is "In an age of chaos, toward new coexistence," with about 1,000 participants from 67 countries. The meeting will discuss the international order and supply chains, new technologies, and future defense.
Lee said the international security environment is facing an unprecedented complex crisis, adding that even the nuclear nonproliferation regime that has supported human peace for decades is being badly shaken.
He added that the rapid development of technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), is becoming a new and hard-to-predict security threat, and that a new model of security cooperation must be built based not only on strong deterrence but also on international norms and shared resilience.
In addition, Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said in a keynote speech that Korea's world-class advanced manufacturing capabilities, the competitiveness of its defense industry, its democratization experience, and the strength of K-culture will be used to build a safer world where prosperity is more widely shared.
She said Korea will extend peace on the Korean Peninsula to stability in Northeast Asia and build a foundation that contributes to world peace and shared prosperity.
