Nominee Lee Hyung-il, deputy prime minister for economic affairs and minister of economy and finance, reported a total of 3.17593 billion won in assets under his, his spouse's, and his children's names. The apartment in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, held in joint title by Lee and his spouse, was reported at a total of 1.319 billion won, with half equity each.
According to the confirmation request submitted to the National Assembly on the 4th, Lee reported 1.704557 billion won in his own assets. He reported half equity in the Jugoong Apartment in Burim-dong, Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, which is in joint title with his spouse, at 659.5 million won. He also holds a jeonse right of 768 million won for Hillstate Sangdo Central Park in Dongjak District, Seoul, and a 2017 Genesis vehicle valued at 11.3 million won. His deposits total 296.694 million won. His debt to the Government Employees Pension Service and NongHyup Bank, among others, is 30.937 million won.
His spouse reported 1.020141 billion won in total assets, including half equity (659.5 million won) in the jointly owned Jugoong Apartment in Gwacheon and deposits (360.641 million won).
The elder daughter reported 235.545 million won, including a jeonse right on a dwellings in Austin, Texas, and deposits, while the elder son reported a total of 215.691 million won, including deposits and securities. Lee's father refused to disclose his assets, citing independent livelihood.
Regarding military service, Lee was discharged as an Air Force first lieutenant, and his elder son postponed enlistment in March for academic reasons.
President Lee Jae-myung, in the statement of reasons for the confirmation request, called Lee "a top policy expert who has served in key economic policy posts across the board," and said he "proved his ability by driving economic takeoff amid internal and external challenges through outstanding expertise, planning and coordination skills, and execution."
However, questions over Lee's actual residence at the Gwacheon apartment are expected to become a point of contention at the confirmation hearing. According to an analysis of the confirmation materials by Rep. Ahn Sang-hoon of the People Power Party, Lee's actual residence periods at the Gwacheon apartment were from Nov. 1, 2012, to Jan. 2, 2013, and from Dec. 3, 2018, to Feb. 8, 2019, totaling four months.
Lee and his spouse bought an apartment in Jugoong Complex 9 in Gwacheon in Feb. 2009 and completed registration in April that year. Both stays occurred during gaps after previous jeonse contracts ended and before moving into the next jeonse home.
The Lee Jae-myung administration has maintained a housing policy focused on actual residence. Lee also said the previous day that "the principle of settling the housing market around residence is a clear direction." The apartment Lee owns is currently being demolished for reconstruction.
