The National Assembly Committee for a Great Economic Leap, co-chaired by National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, will hold a launch ceremony on the 9th and begin full-fledged activities. The committee was set up under the direct control of the speaker of the National Assembly to strengthen communication between the National Assembly and the business community and to derive legislative tasks to support corporations.
According to a compilation of reporting by ChosunBiz on the 4th, Speaker Cho will hold the launch ceremony for the Committee for a Great Economic Leap at the National Assembly on the 9th. Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group and head of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will also attend. Speaker Cho and Chairman Chey will serve as co-chairs of the committee.
After the launch ceremony, the committee plans to explore a national growth strategy and discuss support measures for corporations in subcommittee discussions involving officials from the National Assembly and the business community. An industry official said, "KORCHAM will collect the opinions of corporations and is expected to flesh out legislative tasks by subcommittee."
Speaker Cho has outlined the vision for the committee since immediately after taking office. At his first press briefing in Jul., Cho said, "The aim of the committee is to form a framework that includes the speaker of the National Assembly, the business community, and lawmakers including key standing committee chairs related to the economy," adding, "We will link the discourse raised in the economic field to legislation and the budget."
The launch ceremony is drawing attention as Speaker Cho's first regular National Assembly move since taking the gavel for the latter half of the 22nd National Assembly. It also differs from the first half under Speaker Woo Won-sik, who emphasized "eradication of insurrection," in that Cho, who served as a senior political adviser to President Lee Jae-myung, has adopted a "pragmatic line" centered on people's livelihoods and the economy.
Starting with the launch ceremony, Speaker Cho plans to increase his points of contact with major business leaders. The speaker's office has also reportedly set up a unit dedicated to communication with the business community. An official at the speaker's office said, "After the launch ceremony, Speaker Cho will continue to pursue meetings with The Federation of Korean Industries, major large corporations, and small and medium venture corporations."
