Lee Jae-myung, the president, on the 1st nominated Gye Seung-gyun, a current professor at Pusan National University, as Chairperson of the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property.
The new Chairperson Gye was born in Busan and graduated from Gaya High School and the department of law at Pusan National University. Afterward, Gye earned a master's and doctorate in law at the same university and completed a master's in law at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany.
Gye serves as president of the Korea Intellectual Property Society and as a nonstanding Commissioner of the Korea Copyright Commission (KCC), and is a member of the Korean language deliberation council at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Kang Yu-jung, the Blue House senior spokesperson, said the background of the appointment was that Gye is "an expert who, as a legal scholar well-versed in intellectual property legislation and having broadened expertise to AI and public contracts, has contributed to the development of intellectual property policy and legislation through activities in various government committees and academic societies."
Kang added, "Gye is the right person to proactively respond to changes in new technology environments such as AI and digital transformation and to make intellectual property not only created and protected but also a key driver of national growth," noting, "It is expected that the expertise and effectiveness of the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property will be enhanced, faithfully fulfilling its role as the control tower of the national intellectual property strategy."
