Women's groups criticized the nomination of Yong Hye-in as candidate for Minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family as a "political engineering reshuffle."
On the 31st, the Korea Women's Politics Network issued a commentary titled "Can a political engineering reshuffle be expected to rebound approval ratings" and said it opposed the nomination of Yong.
The group criticized Yong as "a figure who has taken the lead in calling for the complete abolition of supplemental investigative powers, which victims of sexual violence and those vulnerable under the law tearfully appealed for," and said Yong was "unqualified to serve as Minister of the gender equality ministry."
It also took issue with the fact that Yong entered the National Assembly through a satellite party. The group said, "There is no way that a key player who distorted the purpose of the mixed-member proportional representation system can represent the voices of diverse minorities and lead gender-equal democracy," and argued, "A figure who has lost trust cannot carry out the many pending tasks of the gender equality ministry."
It also characterized the appointment as a "decision based on political calculation." The group said, "The essence of this reshuffle lies not in competence and change but in an extremely political calculation," and added, "Political collusion and tricks alone cannot achieve the shared goal of gender equality."
