Starting next year, the government will provide a "marriage support grant" of 1 million won to couples who file a marriage registration. It will also give up to 20 million won per newborn, depending on factors such as the area of residence.
On the 28th, at the "Youth Budget Unboxing 2027" event held at the Blue House, the government announced the "comprehensive investment strategy by youth growth stage," which includes these measures.
The "marriage support grant," to be newly introduced next year, will be provided regardless of the couple's income if they filed a marriage registration. It can be received only once in a lifetime. The marriage support grant replaces the existing 1 million won per couple marriage tax credit with direct fiscal support. The tax credit had the problem that those with low income who did not owe taxes could not receive support.
The government will also introduce a new "child-welcoming support grant" next year, paying 10 million to 20 million won per child. The amount will vary by birth order and area of residence. For example, more money will go to the first child born to a couple living outside the capital region. The grant will be paid in four partitioned installments.
In addition, a basic child allowance will be introduced. It will integrate the existing child allowance, parental benefit, and first-meeting voucher. The payment amount is expected to be two to three times the child allowance, at around 200,000 to 400,000 won.
