A poll found that 63% of the public believe President Lee Jae-myung should make clear that he will not run in the next presidential election. On the government's Aug. 13 real estate measures, 57% said they would not be effective.
In the National Barometer Survey (NBS) conducted by polling firms Embrain Public, Kstat Research, Korea Research International, and Hankook Research of 1,001 people nationwide aged 18 and older on the 24th to 26th, the same polling results emerged.
Specifically, to the question, "What do you think of the argument that to prevent the constitutional amendment debate from spreading into an unnecessary controversy, the president should clarify that he will not run in the next presidential election?" 65% said they "agree." To the same question, 28% said they "disagree," and 9% said "don't know" or did not respond.
By region, agreement was highest in Daegu/North Gyeongsang at 73%. That was followed by Gangwon/Jeju 68%, Incheon/Gyeonggi 65%, Seoul 63%, Chungcheong 62%, and Busan/Ulsan/South Gyeongsang 57%. Honam was lowest at 54%. By party support, 82% of People Power Party supporters and 51% of Democratic Party of Korea supporters said he should declare he will not run. By political leaning, the figures were 75% among conservatives, 66% among moderates, and 55% among progressives.
By age, respondents in their 60s were highest at 74% in saying a declaration by the president not to run in the next election is necessary. That was followed by those 70 and older at 57%, those in their 50s at 63%, those 18 to 29 at 60%, those in their 30s at 60%, and those in their 40s at 52%.
On the government's Aug. 13 real estate measures, 57% said they "will not be effective." Those saying they "will be effective" were 34%. By age, negative evaluations outnumbered positive ones in every age group, with those in their 30s at 70%. By region, only in Honam (53%) were positive evaluations higher. Negative evaluations among moderates and conservatives were 59% and 78%, respectively.
The president's job approval was 50% positive, up 1 percentage point from two weeks earlier (49%). Negative evaluations were 43%, the same as two weeks earlier. By region, positive evaluations were 80% in Honam, 63% in Gangwon/Jeju, 56% in Chungcheong, 52% in Busan/Ulsan/South Gyeongsang, 46% in Incheon/Gyeonggi, 43% in Seoul, and 32% in Daegu/North Gyeongsang. By age, they were 61% in the 40s, 57% in the 50s, 48% in the 60s, 47% among those 70 and older, 45% in the 30s, and 40% among those 18 to 29.
In party support, the Democratic Party of Korea was at 41% and the People Power Party at 23%. From two weeks earlier, the Democratic Party rose 1 percentage point and the People Power Party fell 3 percentage points. The Rebuilding Korea Party was at 2%, the Reform Party at 2%, and The Progressive Party at 1%. Those with no preferred party were 30%. "Don't know" or no response was 1%.
The National Barometer Survey was conducted through interviewer-administered calls using virtual mobile numbers (100%). The margin of sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. The response rate is 15.4%. For details, see the National Election Survey Deliberation Commission website.
