The government will listen to opinions from global semiconductor corporations on a renewable energy–based power supply chain.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment said on the 25th that it will hold a "meeting to secure competitiveness in advanced industries such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI)" with global semiconductor corporations, including Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Google, and ASML, at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 26th.
Co-hosted with SEMI, this meeting was arranged at the request of industry as global semiconductor corporations expand investment in Korea and interest in procuring renewable energy grows.
Advanced industries such as semiconductors and AI data centers require large-scale, stable power while also facing demands to carry out "RE100 (100% renewable energy use)" and reduce greenhouse gases. Accordingly, a stable and competitive renewable energy supply base has emerged as a key condition that determines advanced-industry investment and industrial competitiveness.
At the meeting, the ministry will present ways to achieve the goal of "deploying 100 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2030," focusing on the "first basic plan for renewable energy." Key agenda items include expanding rooftop, agrivoltaic, and floating solar deployment and improving setback regulations; innovating siting systems such as using state and public land and planned siting; shifting to a long-term fixed-price contract market by overhauling the renewable portfolio standard (RPS); market system innovations such as opening a brokerage market for power purchase agreements (PPA); and expanding the national power grid. A Q&A session and hearing of proposals from attending corporations will follow.
Lee Won-ju, director general for energy transition policy at the ministry, said, "To make Korea an attractive investment destination for global advanced industries, we will expand a stable and competitive renewable energy supply base through innovations in siting, markets, and the power grid," and added, "Using this meeting as a starting point, we will continue to communicate and cooperate with industries around the world and reflect that in institutional improvements."
