President Lee Jae-myung on the 25th ordered officials to draw up ways to lower the brokerage fees that delivery applications charge self-employed business owners.
At a Cabinet meeting presided over at the Blue House that day, the president said, "Isn't there talk that delivery app fees are too expensive?" He added, "At a minimum, we need to create a structure of real competition," and said, "I believe the market is in fact a monopoly."
Nam Dong-il, vice chair of the Korea Fair Trade Commission, said, "Right now Baemin and Coupang Eats together hold a 93% market share," adding, "The monopolistic structure has solidified." The president said, "It's a de facto oligopoly, a strong oligopoly," and added, "The ministries need to review what measures are needed to ensure competition among delivery apps."
On expanding government support for public delivery apps run by local governments, the president said, "What's more important is integrating management." He added, "Bundle operations overall and focus on supporting, within what is permitted under the law or international transaction rules, so they can compete in practice."
