The government will form the Hanwoo Industry Development Council to discuss key policies for the premium Korean beef, known as hanwoo industry. The council will deliberate not only on supply control for premium Korean beef, known as hanwoo but also on matters related to incentives for slaughter and shipment, support for stabilizing calf production, management improvement funds, training support, and building an export base.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on the 20th that it has enacted the enforcement decree and enforcement rule of the Act on Transition and Support for the premium Korean beef, known as hanwoo Industry in Line with Carbon Neutrality and will implement them starting on the 21st.
Earlier, with the free trade agreement (FTA) leading to the removal of the tariff on U.S. beef and other products, and as domestic corporations entered the premium Korean beef, known as hanwoo industry, the livestock industry called for legislation to support premium Korean beef, known as hanwoo farms.
With the law taking effect, the government will establish a comprehensive plan every five years to foster and support the premium Korean beef, known as hanwoo industry, based on a fact-finding survey and related statistics. Annual implementation plans under the comprehensive plan must also be prepared and disclosed on the ministry's website.
Criteria were also set for corporations' participation in the production business for premium Korean beef, known as hanwoo. The scope of application is corporations of medium size or larger based on their main line of business and average sales. These corporations must engage in low-carbon farming activities, secure land for cultivating forage crops for roughage, and establish a roughage production plan. The targets include large corporations, medium-sized corporations, and companies belonging to business groups subject to disclosure.
