At the Democratic Party of Korea's Aug. 17 national convention, newly elected leader Kim Min-seok said on the 17th, "Starting today, every day the Democratic Party will become a 'responsible party' that takes charge of people's lives, beyond a party of history and a democratic party."
At the Daejeon Convention Center (DCC) that day, in his acceptance speech as party leader, Kim said, "From now on, we will become a Democratic Party of bread-and-butter politics that put food on the table, big and broad expansion politics, and a competent, livelihood-centered majority party," and stated accordingly.
Regarding his election as party leader, Kim said, "It is an honor because it is the Democratic Party I love like my own body, and it is historic because it is the first choice under one person, one vote party member sovereignty," adding, "I am overwhelmed to follow my lifelong teacher Kim Dae-jung, and proud to continue the path of my lifelong comrade Lee Jae-myung."
He went on, "I will change the Democratic Party. Our language, policies, attitude, and culture will all evolve," adding, "I will run together with Jung Chung-rae, the evangelist of one person, one vote, and Song Young-gil, a prepared leader. I will open the field wide and invite them to work together."
Kim also said, "The relationship between the party and the presidential office, and between the party and the government, will be a creative, horizontal relationship of full cooperation that supports President Lee Jae-myung, who stands at the center of state affairs, and the government," adding, "The party will work for the success of President Lee and the government of popular sovereignty. That success is the people's success."
He continued, "We are facing difficult situations inside and outside the party. Storms of internal and external troubles will strike," stressing, "The Democratic Party will take responsibility. Let's go together into a golden age with no one left behind, with no alienation, no discrimination."
Kim's term begins immediately upon election and runs for two years. As supreme council members, who are part of the party leadership, pro-Lee Jae-myung faction candidates Park Seon-won and Seo Mi-hwa, and pro-Jung Chung-rae faction candidates Choi Min-hee, Lee Seong-yun, and Han Min-soo were elected.
