In the Honam regional primary of the Aug. 17 convention to elect the next leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea, candidate Kim Min-seok won with 57.54% of the vote. Kim led candidate Jung Chung-rae (32.65%) by 24.89 percentage points (p). Candidate Song Young-gil took 9.81%.
The Democratic Party Central Election Commission, chaired by So Byung-hoon, announced the results on the afternoon of the 15th at the Jeonbuk joint speech event held at the Culture and Sports Center of Wonkwang University in Iksan, Jeonbuk.
Kim led Jung in both Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk.
In Gwangju, Jeonnam, Kim won 86,558 votes (57.04%) out of 151,756, while Jung received 48,324 (31.84%) and Song received 16,874 (11.12%).
In Jeonbuk, Kim won 52,749 votes (58.39%) out of 90,333, while Jung received 30,709 (34%) and Song received 6,875 (7.61%).
In the Supreme Council race as well, where five are elected out of eight candidates, pro-Myung faction candidates held the advantage.
In the Honam rights party member vote, candidate Park Sun-won ranked first with 18.53%, and candidate Choi Min-hee was second with 14.79%. They were followed by candidate Seo Mi-hwa with 14.24%, candidate Kim Yong with 13.63%, and candidate Lee Sung-yoon with 13.05%, with candidate Han Min-soo at 11.25%, candidate Lim Mi-ae at 7.6%, and candidate Kim Young-ho at 4.29%.
In the cumulative tally as well, candidate Park Sun-won led with 17.7%, surpassing candidate Choi Min-hee, who had been in front, at 17.33%. They were followed by candidate Seo Mi-hwa at 15.65%, candidate Kim Yong at 13.18%, and candidate Han Min-soo at 12.7% within the winning range.
They were followed by candidate Lee Sung-yoon at 12.51%, candidate Lim Mi-ae at 7.17%, and candidate Kim Young-ho at 3.76%.
Immediately after the results were announced, asked by reporters whether "today's gap feels bigger than expected," Jung said, "I do not make predictions or analyses," adding, "I am grateful even when rights party members give me less. With the Gyeonggi-Seoul primary tomorrow, I will again do my best."
Regarding Song's argument that "prosecution reform should be completed and then judicial reform should be carried out," Jung said, "Reform means changing what is wrong, so saying reform is finished is incorrect," adding, "You ate yesterday, so do you not eat today?"
