A people's recommendation committee for the "special counsel (independent counsel) for the National Election Commission," which is investigating issues including the shortage of ballots in the June 3 local elections, recommended former Ministry of Justice inspection officer Lee Hyuk (20th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute) and former Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office criminal division 4 chief prosecutor Lee Tae-han (23rd class) as candidates.
On the 14th in the morning, the people's recommendation committee held a meeting at the National Assembly and chose two of the six people recommended by the Korean Bar Association and the Law School Deans Council as candidates to be forwarded to President Lee Jae-myung. All of the candidates recommended by the Korean Bar Association and the Law School Deans Council were former prosecutors.
The special counsel candidates selected by the people's recommendation committee have experience investigating high-ranking public officials and are classified as so-called "special investigations" experts. Former prosecutor Lee Hyuk worked on a special counsel team that investigated the "Roh Moo-hyun former president's aides' corruption" case. Former prosecutor Lee Tae-han served as head of the special investigations department at the Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office.
The people's recommendation committee was formed with three recommendations each from the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party. The Democratic Party of Korea recommended attorneys Cho Doo-hyun and Cho Ki-yeon and Sogang University political science and international relations professor Ha Sang-eung, while the People Power Party recommended attorneys Kim Yong-gwan and Choi Chang-ho and Korea University law school professor Cha Jin-a.
President Lee Jae-myung will appoint one of the two candidates recommended by the people's recommendation committee as the special counsel. The special counsel team will be formed with 165 members, and the activity period is up to 170 days.
