The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to supply power to the Honam region and the Yongin semiconductor cluster.
The ministry said on Dec. 12 it held the "Honam region and Yongin semiconductor megaproject power supply agreement ceremony" at the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) Gyeongin Construction Division in Jung-gu, Seoul.
The ministry projected the Honam semiconductor cluster will need a total of 6 GW of power. Accordingly, starting in 2029, it plans to supply about 3 GW in phase one through initial power supply facilities, and then, with additional facilities in phase two, supply cumulative power of 6 GW or more to the Honam cluster.
For the Yongin semiconductor cluster, some parts of the Yongin general industrial complex power supply agreement signed on Nov. 2024 were revised, and a new phase-two power supply agreement for the Yongin semiconductor cluster was concluded. This follows a plan by semiconductor corporations to move up the final fab (factory) completion timeline and double memory production capacity within five years.
Accordingly, power will be supplied in phases to a total of six fabs through 2041. In phase one, by 2032, initial demand will be met by using short-distance lines near the cluster and three 1 GW LNG power plants within the industrial complex, leveraging volumes from replacing aging coal. In phase two, by '35, the plan is to meet additional demand by measures such as increasing the capacity of existing lines.
