Minister Kim Jung-kwan of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources said on the 11th regarding the Honam semiconductor cluster that "with a goal of completing the first phase of the semiconductor fab (factory) in 2029, we decided to push ahead at speed with the establishment of a national industrial complex led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, as well as the industrial complex master plan."
That day, the Minister said this while reporting the results of the second public-private joint review meeting on the three megaprojects at a Cabinet meeting held at the Government Complex Sejong. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix previously released an investment plan to build two semiconductor fabs each in Honam, four in total, with a combined investment of 800 trillion won.
The government plans to temporarily relocate the functions of the Gwangju military airport, which has been designated as the site for the Honam semiconductor cluster, to another military airport by mid-2028 and advance the start of operations for the semiconductor cluster.
The Minister said, "In order to expedite the start of the semiconductor cluster in the Honam region, we reviewed measures to secure the site and infrastructure, and the central and local governments and corporations agreed to cooperate so the project can get on track quickly."
He added, "For core infrastructure such as power and water, we will support stable power supply through local renewable energy, energy storage systems (ESS), and combined heat and power and liquefied natural gas (LNG) generation, and in particular, we will provide seamless support led by the climate ministry, including shortening the construction period for phase-one underground transmission lines."
