Han Byeong-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized the People Power Party for trying to postpone until later the "Olympic Park (Olgong) ballot counting site recount schedule" to link it to a special counsel, saying it is "using the people's mandate to reform the National Election Commission for political calculation."
At a floor countermeasure meeting on the morning of the 11th, the floor leader said, "The ruling and opposition floor leadership agreed to extend the National Assembly investigation period by 30 days to reverify the Olgong ballot counting site," and added, "The People Power Party is now effectively trying to postpone even the recount scheduled for the 18th to link it to a special counsel."
He continued, "They said we should do (the recount) if the special counsel bill is agreed to, then once it was agreed to they said we should do it when the special counsel is appointed, and now they say the schedule must be set in consultation with the special counsel," adding, "They are using for political calculation the people's mandate to completely reform the National Election Commission by thoroughly eradicating its deficiencies and establishing measures to prevent a recurrence."
On the 10th, the ruling and opposition parties fought over the "Olgong ballot counting site recount schedule" at the National Assembly's special committee for an investigation into the National Election Commission. The ruling party argued that the recount should proceed on the 18th as already agreed, while the opposition countered that the schedule should be rescheduled in connection with the special counsel's investigation.
The floor leader said, "It was originally the People Power Party that called for a recount," adding, "The National Election Commission issue has fueled public outrage, and we are pushing it with the determination to carry out reforms tantamount to dismantlement, but I cannot understand the People Power Party acting like this." He added, "Whether they fear facing the truth, they are repeating behavior that defies understanding even when we try to accept it."
