It was tallied on the 9th that medical schools nationwide will select half of next year's freshmen from regional students.
According to Jongno Academy on the 9th, medical schools at 39 universities nationwide will admit 3,508 students for the 2027 academic year, of whom 1,734 will be selected only from regional students. The selection ratio for regional students is 49.4%, a record high.
The increase in the selection of regional students is attributed to the expansion of the regional talent admissions track. The regional talent track is a system that requires medical schools and others to select regional students at or above a certain ratio to help non-capital region students enter college. The number of regional talent seats at medical schools in provincial areas rose from 1,232 for the 2026 academic year to 1,268 for the 2027 academic year.
Im Sung-ho, head of Jongno Academy, said, "This year's medical school admissions can be seen as the most difficult ever for students from the Seoul area," adding, "For students in provincial areas, this year has shaped up to be the easiest ever to get into medical school."
