The government is reportedly reviewing a plan to ban the use of disposable paper cups inside cafes.
According to government sources on the 9th, the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy recently said in a presidential briefing that it plans to ban the use of disposable paper cups inside stores as well as disposable plastic cups.
The ministry plans to phase in a ban on the use of disposable paper cups inside cafes, starting with larger-store locations. It is also reviewing a plan to include not only franchise cafes but also independently operated cafes in the scope of regulation.
Earlier, in Nov. 2023, the Ministry of Environment withdrew a regulation banning the use of disposable paper cups at cafes and other food service establishments, citing the burden on small business owners.
The ministry plans to finalize the specific regulatory measures and timeline through consultations with the industry.
