The public recommendation committee for nominating candidates for the "special prosecutor for the election commission to investigate the truth behind the 'June 3 local election ballot paper shortage crisis'" decided to select two special prosecutor candidates to deliver to President Lee Jae-myung on the 14th.
The public recommendation committee held its first meeting on the morning of the 7th at the National Assembly Members' Office Building and began the process of recommending special prosecutor candidates. The committee will send a request for recommendations of special prosecutor candidates to the Korean Bar Association and the Association of Law Schools within the day.
Attorney Jo Ki-yeon, a member of the public recommendation committee, met with reporters after the meeting and said, "If we send the request today, the two organizations will each reply to the committee with three candidates by the 12th," adding, "Using those lists, we plan to decide on two candidates that the public recommendation committee will recommend to the president through a meeting on the 14th."
He added, "This is a special prosecutor launched by bipartisan agreement in an unprecedented situation of infringement on the public's suffrage," and said, "We have a responsibility to meet the public demand to select a proper special prosecutor that will resolve public doubts, including the election commission's poor election management, and uncover the truth behind various issues."
The public recommendation committee for the election commission special prosecutor was formed with three members each recommended by the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party. The Democratic Party recommended attorneys Jo Du-hyeon and Jo Ki-yeon and Professor Ha Sang-eung of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Sogang University, while the People Power Party recommended attorneys Kim Yong-gwan and Choi Chang-ho and Professor Cha Jin-a of the Korea University School of Law.
