The People Power Party Central Ethics Committee launched disciplinary proceedings against lawmakers Seo Beom-su and Jin Jong-oh over inappropriate remarks about the victim in the "Busan roundhouse kick" case. It also decided to send a fact-finding questionnaire to lawmakers Jin Jong-oh, Cho Kyung-tae, and Kwon Young-jin, whose disciplinary procedures had already been initiated.
The People Power Party ethics committee held a meeting from 10 a.m. on the 7th to review disciplinary measures and other matters for lawmakers from the same party.
After the meeting, the ethics committee said in a news release, "We have initiated disciplinary procedures against party members Jin Jong-oh and Seo Beom-su over inappropriate remarks at a meeting on crime victims held on the 4th," and added, "For party members Jin Jong-oh, Cho Kyung-tae, and Kwon Young-jin, whose disciplinary procedures were initiated at the last meeting, we decided to send a questionnaire for a fact-finding investigation."
On the 4th, at a Criminal Procedure Act forum hosted by independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon, Seo told Jin, "How about one roundhouse kick match," and later apologized. Jin, who replied in the sense that he "uses his hands better than his feet," also posted an apology shortly after the controversy.
Cho, for whom disciplinary procedures had previously begun, faced proceedings for allegedly making get-out-the-vote calls for Vice Speaker Park Deok-heum to lawmakers from other parties. Jin faced proceedings for supporting independent candidate Han Dong-hoon during the Busan Buk-gap by-election held alongside the June 3 local elections, and Kwon was referred to the ethics committee after grabbing Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik by the collar while objecting to standing committee assignments.
The People Power Party ethics committee has returned to a "five-member system." Vice Chair U Jong-hwan and Commissioner Hwang Kyung-seong said in a statement that day, "With a heavy heart to take responsibility for the recent internal strife in the ethics committee, we intend to resign," and added, "We earnestly urge Chairperson Yun Min-woo, who is at the center of various allegations, to make an honorable choice on their own before leaving an indelible stigma in history with even greater suspicion."
Previously, some People Power Party ethics commissioners raised allegations that, when discussing discipline for lawmaker Han Dong-hoon and others, contents were shared in advance with outsiders, violating the "duty of confidentiality."
