Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) said on the 6th that a shell found on the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway in Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province, was confirmed to be a dummy round with no lethality.
According to the corporation on the 6th, at about 1:28 p.m. a citizen report came in that a metal item had fallen near Changnyeong IC on the Yangpyeong-bound side of the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway in Deohap-myeon, Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province. At about 1:45 p.m., police who were dispatched to the scene identified the metal item as a KM107 shell and notified the Army 39th Division.
The corporation said, "The object is a dummy round not intended for firing, so it has no lethality."
For safety, the corporation fully restricted traffic in the No. 2 lane on the Yangpyeong-bound section between Changnyeong IC and Hyunpung IC from 2:11 p.m. that day. After the military completed collecting the shell, No. 1 lane traffic resumed from 3:26 p.m., and full traffic resumed at 3:37 p.m. As of 5:10 p.m., the section is operating normally with no separate congestion.
Police, at the military's request, are investigating the exact circumstances on the view that the shell fell onto the road due to improper loading from a civilian cargo truck transporting the dummy round.
