President Lee Jae-myung on the 5th sent a congratulatory message on soprano Jo Sumi becoming the first Asian musician to receive the Maria Callas Special Award, saying it is "a great joy and pride for all the people of the Republic of Korea."
On X (formerly Twitter) that day, the president said, "I sincerely congratulate Jo Sumi on receiving the 12th Maria Callas Special Award," and stated accordingly.
He added, "As the first Asian vocalist to receive an award honoring Maria Callas, the legendary figure of world opera, you have set a new milestone for Korea's culture and arts."
He went on, "This year is especially meaningful as it marks the 40th anniversary of Jo Sumi's debut on the international stage," and added, "I extend my deep respect and gratitude for conveying emotion beyond borders and the world with a beautiful voice over the past 40 years and for bringing luster to the name of the Republic of Korea."
The president concluded, "I look forward to your continuing to be a source of hope and courage for many and a reliable guide for junior artists," and, "I will always cheer you on with strength."
