Han Byeong-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said about the tax revision plan the government released the day before, on the 3rd, that "it is about correcting an unreasonable tax system," adding that it is "a plan to normalize taxes by rationally adjusting special cases that have low effectiveness or are excessively concentrated on a few."
Han said at a floor countermeasures meeting held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 4th, "This revision plan actively supports strategic industries and domestic investment, and while thickening benefits needed for low-income people, youth, and regions, it rationally adjusts special cases that are excessively concentrated."
In particular, regarding the real estate tax revision plan, Han said, "It protects single-homeowners for actual residence purposes, and rationally adjusts the excessively concentrated benefits for ultra-high-priced dwellings and nonresidential dwellings to match the dwelling value and whether there is actual residence."
Han also rebutted criticism from the People Power Party. When Jeong Jeom-sik, floor leader of the People Power Party, said of the government's tax revision plan the day before that it was "the worst tax hike that strengthens both holding taxes and transaction taxes," and that "the burden on high-priced dwellings and single nonresidential homeowners could be passed on to monthly and jeonse rents," Han emphasized, "For single residential dwellings, the basic deduction for the comprehensive real estate tax will be raised from an officially assessed price of 1.2 billion won to 1.4 billion won, and for dwellings valued at 3 billion won or less that have been occupied for 10 years or more, the basic deduction for capital gains tax will be expanded tenfold from 2.5 million won to 25 million won."
He added, "The People Power Party is hiding these support and protection measures and is merely repeating the old agitation of a tax bomb," and said, "Do not mislead the public by tearing off only part of the revision plan and treating it as the whole."
Han also said, "The government plan is the starting point for deliberations in the National Assembly," adding, "The Democratic Party of Korea will carefully examine the policy's effectiveness, public acceptance, and the predictability of the system during the upcoming National Assembly review."
