Three candidates for the Democratic Party of Korea leadership fanned out to the provinces to resume courting party members. Candidate Jung Chung-rae headed to Gangwon, the next primary site, while candidates Kim Min-seok and Song Young-gil went to their stronghold of Honam. Song appealed with a policy vision, Jung spotlighted Kim's past, and Kim urged support by highlighting conflict between the party and the presidential office.
Jung visited Gangneung, Wonju and Chuncheon on the 3rd and continued his offensive against Kim. Jung said, "When President Roh Moo-hyun's approval rating fell (in 2002), they shook him, and in the end someone like candidate Kim betrayed him for Chung Mong-joon and flew away," adding, "A person who betrays once betrays again, and someone who keeps faith keeps faith."
He went on, "If candidate Kim becomes party leader, it's obvious what will happen. Elect Jung Chung-rae so that doesn't happen," adding, "If I become party leader, I will order an ethics inspection of candidate Kim, who put the party at risk by raising the Shincheonji allegations."
Kim visited Jeonju in North Jeolla and Gwangju the same day and said the "Myeong-cheong war" continuing would endanger the "three mega projects." Kim said, "If the conflict called the Myeong-cheong war continues for just one more month, the president and the direction of state affairs will be shaken, and the 'North Jeolla Hyundai Motor mega project' will be shaken."
Kim also said, "We must elect a party leader who will firmly support the president's governance, a party leader who can win the next general election, a reliable party leader," adding, "I am someone recognized by President Lee Jae-myung, who is best at getting things done and gives out the most work."
Song visited Suncheon and Yeosu, Gwangyang and Damyang in South Jeolla and Gwangju that day. Song said, "(Jung and Kim) keep criticizing each other every day, and I am at least presenting policies and a vision," adding, "My running allows the Democratic Party's national convention to find a center, to find balance."
He added, "I ask you to feel free to vote for Song Young-gil. Under the preferential voting system, there is no wasted vote even if you vote for Song Young-gil," stressing, "You need to rally your strength for me in South Jeolla and Gwangju so that not only in this convention but even afterward we can get anything done."
The Democratic Party completed its traveling primaries in the Chungcheong region and in Busan-Ulsan-North Gyeongsang on the 1st and 2nd. The cumulative combined vote shares for the two regional rounds (without weighting) were 45.51% for Jung, 44.52% for Kim and 9.97% for Song. The Democratic Party will hold traveling primaries in Jeju-Incheon and in Gangwon-Daegu-North Gyeongsang on the 8th and 9th.
