In the Aug. 17 Democratic Party of Korea national convention's Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang (Gyeongnam) regional primary to elect the next leadership, Jung Chung-rae took first place in the combined tally. Kim Min-seok placed first in Ulsan, but Jung raised the voting rate among dues-paying members in Busan and Gyeongnam.
On the 2nd in the afternoon, the Democratic Party held a joint speech event for the "Gyeongnam regional primary to elect the party leader and Supreme Council members" at Changwon National University in South Gyeongsang and announced the results for Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam. In the regional primaries, only the voting rate among dues-paying members is disclosed. A total of 53,993 dues-paying members took part in the vote that day.
Jung won 25,189 out of 53,993 votes, posting a voting rate of 46.65%. Kim won 23,675 votes (43.85%), and Song Young-gil received 5,129 votes (9.50%). The gap between Jung and Kim was 2.8 percentage points (p), or 1,514 votes.
In Ulsan, the first primary site of the day, Kim led. In Ulsan, Kim won 4,337 out of 9,363 votes (46.32%). Jung had 4,054 votes (43.40%), and Song had 972 votes (10.38%).
In Busan and Gyeongnam, Jung won the most votes. In Busan, Jung won 10,345 out of 21,216 votes (48.76%), while Kim had 9,182 votes (43.28%). Song received 1,689 votes (7.96%). In Gyeongnam, out of 23,414 voters, Jung had 10,790 votes (46.08%), Kim 10,156 (43.38%), and Song 2,468 (10.54%).
In the Supreme Council election, Choi Min-hee took first with 24,696 votes. Next was Park Sun-won with 17,317 votes. They were followed by Han Min-soo (16,060 votes), Seo Mi-hwa (14,961), Kim Yong (13,232), Lee Sung-yoon (12,816), Lim Mi-ae (5,765), and Kim Young-ho (3,139).
