Jung Chung-rae, a Democratic Party of Korea leadership contender, seized victory in the first week of the traveling primary in the "PK (Busan, Ulsan, South Gyeongsang)" region, rising to No. 1 in the cumulative combined vote share. He reclaimed the top spot after yielding it to Kim Min-seok in his home base of the Chungcheong region. The Democratic Party of Korea will hold traveling primaries in Jeju and Incheon on the 8th and in Gangwon, Daegu and North Gyeongsang on the 9th.
According to the political sphere on the 2nd, Jung's cumulative combined vote share among dues-paying members in the Chungcheong region and Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang is 45.51%. Kim stands at 44.52%. The gap between the two is 0.99 percentage points (p). This is a simple sum; the Democratic Party of Korea adds a 5% weight to the vote share in weaker regions such as South Gyeongsang. Jung took first place in South Gyeongsang, gaining an advantage from the weighting.
Kim opened the main race the previous day by eking out a narrow win in Jung's home base of the Chungcheong region by 303 votes, a 0.45 percentage point gap. But the joy did not last long. The next day, Jung reclaimed first place in Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang by 2.8 percentage points.
After the Busan, Ulsan and South Gyeongsang traveling primary results were announced, Jung told reporters, "Just as President Roh Moo-hyun beat Lee In-je, Jung Chung-rae will beat Kim Min-seok," adding, "President Roh, who had neither an organization nor lawmakers, defeated Lee In-je, who lined up organizations and lawmakers."
The Democratic Party of Korea will hold traveling primaries in Jeju and Incheon on the 8th, and in Gangwon, Daegu and North Gyeongsang on the 9th. Daegu and North Gyeongsang, like South Gyeongsang, are weaker regions that receive weighting. After that, primaries will be held in Honam, which has the largest concentration of dues-paying members, on the 15th, and in Gyeonggi and Seoul on the 16th. The final winner is scheduled to be announced on the 17th in Daejeon.
This party convention will be conducted with 70% from delegates and dues-paying members and 30% from a public opinion poll. Currently, only the dues-paying member vote is underway. Delegates will take part through online voting on the 17th, and the public opinion poll will be conducted on the 15th–16th.
