Lee Un-ju of the Democratic Party of Korea said on the 1st that she opposes the swift handling of the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act abolishing prosecutors' supplementary investigation authority.
That morning on her Facebook page, Lee said, "Given public opinion in which many people oppose revising the Criminal Procedure Act, we should have been more cautious, and it is truly regrettable that it was rushed through."
She went on, "I agree 100% that prosecution reform is a task of the times, and more than anyone I have taken the lead in fighting against political prosecutors since the previous administration," but added, "Whether to abolish supplementary investigation authority entirely is a different matter from prosecution reform or political prosecutors; it is an issue of guaranteeing the basic rights of the public, especially victims."
She continued, "As revealed in cases such as the Kim Chang-min director case and the Jang Yoon-gi case, there is overwhelming public opinion that prosecutors' supplementary investigation authority should be retained to keep police investigative inadequacies or possible internal corruption in check," adding, "At a minimum, for serious crimes unrelated to the political prosecutors issue and directly tied to people's livelihoods and basic rights, we should at least temporarily have ensured that there would be no infringement of people's basic rights due to a vacuum in checking power."
Lee also signaled she is open to future supplementation or revisions. Noting, "I do not understand why it had to be pushed through so forcibly against the opposition of the majority of the public," she said, "If necessary, I will propose supplementation and revisions at any time."
Meanwhile, Lee Un-ju of the Democratic Party of Korea was hospitalized in early Jul. 2026 and has been recuperating due to severe psychological shock after a malicious pornographic deepfake of her face was circulated online, and as a result, she was reportedly unable to take part in the vote on this Criminal Procedure Act amendment.
