The government is launching development of technology to produce solid fuel from livestock manure (cattle dung) and use it for electricity and heat. The government said it plans to reduce water pollution and expand renewable energy through this.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment said they will hold a kickoff briefing on "biomass solid fuel production and utilization technology development" on the 28th at Summit One Seoul Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, to produce solid fuel from livestock manure (cattle dung) and use it for electricity and heat.
Until now, most livestock manure has been composted, causing increased algal blooms in rivers due to reduced farmland area and excessive application. In addition, to replace woody biomass with high dependence on imported wood pellets and chips, there is a need for solid fuel based on unused domestic biomass such as livestock manure.
The government plans to use livestock manure that had been composted beyond necessity to manufacture solid fuel and use it as power plant fuel to produce electricity and heat. Through this, it will push to reduce water pollution and expand renewable energy.
To that end, it planned a multi-ministerial biomass solid fuel research and development (R&D) project that links technologies under the purview of the Agriculture Ministry and the climate ministry, covering everything from feedstock collection to solid fuel production and use, and pollutant reduction.
From this year through 2029, a total of 29.8 billion won will be invested to promote development of industrialization technology for cattle-dung solid fuel, development of biomass solid fuel production and utilization technologies, and advancement of pollution prevention technologies for solid fuel production and utilization facilities.
