People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik said that if President Lee Jae-myung does not exercise the right to request reconsideration on a bill to amend the Criminal Procedure Act centered on abolishing the supplementary investigation authority, "the government and the ruling party will collapse together."
Jeong wrote on his Facebook page on the morning of the 26th, "The whole country is in turmoil over whether to keep or abolish the supplementary investigation authority, yet President Lee Jae-myung alone remains silent," adding, "Why does someone who micromanages even the deposit for the ruling party's supreme council election have nothing to say about this?"
He continued, "From the president's standpoint, openly calling for abolishing the supplementary investigation authority would raise fears of a crime wave and a backlash in public opinion, but calling for keeping it would inevitably require considering relations with hard-liners in the Democratic Party," criticizing that "political responsibility is being evaded on a matter that shakes the foundation of the rule of law."
Jeong also said, "The Democratic Party, too, is rushing into a speed campaign for abolition while watching its hard-core base, and candidates running in the party convention are using it as a means to win votes," arguing that "the lives and safety of the people are being treated as objects of political calculation."
He added, "If the bill to abolish the supplementary investigation authority passes the plenary session and the president even gives up the right to request reconsideration, from that moment the government and the ruling party will collapse together."
