The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) said on the 22nd it will expand employment insurance coverage to workers in four job categories.
The ministry on the day gave advance notice of legislation for a partial amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Employment Insurance Act reflecting this plan. The comment period runs until the 31st of next month.
Currently, employment insurance covers ▲ insurance planners ▲ after-school instructors ▲ parcel delivery drivers ▲ credit card membership recruiters, but critics said too few occupations fall under these categories. In response, the ministry decided in this amendment to include cross recruiters (planners who can recruit for both life insurance and non-life insurance) and recruiters for credit unions and the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (KFCC) mutual aid. In the after-school instructor category, instructors for specialized after-school programs at kindergartens and instructors for special activity programs at daycare centers were included. In the parcel delivery driver category, drivers handling deliveries that involve furniture installation under the Act on Consumer Logistics Services were added, and in the credit card membership recruiter category, affiliate recruiters were included.
According to the ministry, the amendment is expected to add 17,000 people to employment insurance. Kim Young-hoon, Minister of the ministry, said, "The employment safety net for some job categories that had been in the blind spot of employment insurance will be further strengthened."
