The People Power Party on the 21st announced seven nominees for National Assembly standing committee chairs allotted to the opposition.
The People Power Party on the day recommended Rep. Lee Man-hee for Health and Welfare Committee chair, Rep. Kim Sung-won for Trade, Industry, SMEs and Startups Committee chair, Rep. Kim Hee-jeong for Education Committee chair, and Rep. Lim Lee-ja for Gender Equality and Family Committee chair, respectively.
Rep. Lee Yang-soo was named as the nominee for Intelligence Committee chair. Under an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties, Lee will serve as Intelligence Committee chair for one year and then serve as Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries Committee chair for the remaining year. The Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee and the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee will each be split for one year by Rep. Kim Jung-jae and Rep. Song Seok-jun, respectively.
After resolving at a general meeting of lawmakers in the afternoon to end its boycott of standing committees and return to the National Assembly, the People Power Party unveiled its nominees for standing committee chairs. All are three-term lawmakers. However, there is also talk that some four-term lawmakers who have not previously served as standing committee chairs, including Ahn Cheol-soo and Yu Eui-dong, may demand a primary.
The National Assembly is set to convene a plenary session on the 23rd to elect the People Power Party's nominees as standing committee chairs. The National Assembly Act stipulates that standing committee chairs are chosen by a vote of the plenary session.
