The Rural Development Administration (Administrator Lee Seung-don) said on the 20th it will hold a meeting on the 21st to boost the industry for Dodam rice, a domestic functional rice variety.
The meeting will be attended by related agencies, including the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), The Korea Agriculture Technology Promotion Agency (KOAT), and the Korea Rice Processing Industry Association, as well as officials from Jincheon County, North Chungcheong, and Namhae County, South Gyeongsang, which produce "Dodam rice." In addition, companies that received a patent technology transfer for "Dodam rice" and are developing and distributing products will also be present.
The meeting will feature presentations by experts in each field. The topics are: ▲ trends and cases of entering the global (U.S.) market for processed foods (Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation) ▲ the pre-review system and cases for functional labeling foods (Jung Myung-seop, president of the Food Safety Policy Research Institute) ▲ major research and development achievements and the status of technology transfer for "Dodam rice" (Park Ji-young, researcher at the National Institute of Crop Science) ▲ sharing business models and cases of companies with technology transfer (Lee Dong-han, CEO of Biomoa Medical), among others.
According to the Rural Development Administration, Dodam rice showed preventive effects against diabetes and metabolic diseases in a human application trial involving patients with obesity. Insulin resistance in obese patients who consumed Dodam rice fell 38.2%, and the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) dropped 3%. Dodam rice has more than twice the amylose (starch) content of ordinary rice and contains over 10% "resistant starch," a type of dietary fiber that is not digested in the small intestine and is fermented in the large intestine. Technology transfer related to Dodam rice has been carried out in about 70 cases to a total of 35 companies.
