If monthly income is 800,000 won or more, workers will be able to enroll in employment insurance regardless of working hours.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) said on the 10th it will give advance notice of legislation for partial amendments to subordinate statutes of the Employment Insurance Act and the Act on the Collection of Employment Insurance and Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Premiums, centered on these measures. Currently, those eligible for employment insurance are workers who work 60 hours a month (15 hours a week) or more, but going forward it will be expanded to workers with monthly income of 800,000 won or more. Even if the combined monthly salaries from multiple business sites exceed 800,000 won, workers can enroll in employment insurance.
By enrolling in employment insurance, workers can receive job-seeking benefits (unemployment benefits), parental leave benefits, reduced working hours during childrearing benefits, and maternity leave benefits. Based on last year's income, the labor ministry projected that 350,000 people will be able to newly enroll in employment insurance.
The "annual total remuneration report," which employers had filed once a year, will be abolished. Instead, a "monthly remuneration report" system will be introduced. This is to improve the accuracy of insurance coverage. Accordingly, employers must report monthly remuneration to the Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service (K-COMWEL) each month. They may substitute this by filing income with the National Tax Service.
