It was reported on the 7th that the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) will hold a forum to discuss win-win plans between original contractors and subcontractors in relation to "excess profits of large corporations."
The ministry plans to hold a forum next week under the theme "A new path of social innovation in step with artificial intelligence (AI) technological innovation." The forum will discuss innovation investment by corporations for a sustainable future, win-win cooperation between original contractors and subcontractors, jobs for future generations, talent development, and expansion of the social safety net.
Earlier in May, Minister Kim Young-hoon said at a tea meeting with the ministry press corps that he would open an emergency op-ed to explore the possibility of a Korean-style social solidarity wage over how to redistribute the excess profits of large corporations to society. The trigger was Samsung Electronics labor and management agreeing to pay 10.5% of operating profit—before taxes—from the semiconductor boom as a special management performance bonus to the semiconductor (DS·Device Solutions) institutional sector.
On this, the Minister said, "Samsung Electronics' success today is the sum of the devoted efforts of its labor and management, plus the efforts of the state, local communities, and society."
A ministry official said, "Specific participants and the schedule are being coordinated."
