The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) imposed fines of 5.8 million won and 14 million won, respectively, on IICOMBINED and Samjong KPMG for violating the Labor Standards Act, including failing to pay night and holiday work allowances.
The ministry on the 1st announced the results of a special inspection into IICOMBINED and Samjong KPMG, which faced allegations of long working hours. IICOMBINED is a business site that operates "Gentle Monster," an eyeglasses manufacturer.
According to the ministry's inspection, IICOMBINED failed to pay a total of 430 million won in night and holiday work allowances to 464 employees. Although weekly overtime is limited to 12 hours, 115 violations were detected. It also granted fewer than 20 days of leave to a worker who applied for spousal childbirth leave and did not preserve documents related to wage determination. The ministry imposed fines of 5.8 million won and ordered corrections for the legal violations.
Samjong KPMG failed to pay a total of 630 million won in night and holiday work allowances to 2,629 employees. Thirty-five cases of exceeding 12 hours of weekly overtime were found. It also ordered holiday work for a pregnant worker without approval from the Minister of the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL). It did not provide sexual harassment prevention training to 95 employees, including those dispatched overseas. The ministry therefore ordered corrections for the legal violations and imposed fines of 14 million won.
Vice Minister Kwon Chang-jun of the ministry said, "We will rectify establishments that tolerate long working hours under the pretexts of expertise and comprehensive wage agreements through thorough inspections and strict law enforcement."
