The Democratic Party of Korea said it would push for a special counsel investigation into the National Election Commission as the party line over the ballot shortage that occurred during the June 3 local elections.
Han Byeong-do, the Democratic Party floor leader, said at the supreme council meeting at the National Assembly on the 29th, "The Democratic Party will push as the party line for a special counsel to root out this crisis and punish those responsible, along with institutional reforms."
Han said, "There are no untouchable areas in reforming the National Election Commission. The infringement of suffrage due to the ballot shortage is a disaster that cannot be justified by any excuse," adding, "The Democratic Party is accelerating reforms of the National Election Commission to meet public expectations through the swift launch of a parliamentary investigation and the inauguration of a National Election Commission reform task force (TF)."
He went on to say, "The election commission reform TF announced fundamental reform plans, including dismantling the commission through a constitutional amendment, expanding standing members, and introducing a confirmation hearing for the secretary-general," adding, "As a responsible ruling party, the Democratic Party will push both thorough institutional improvements and a rigorous fact-finding investigation."
