The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) said on the 29th it will carry out a special inspection of Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon business site, where five people were killed in a fire and explosion.
The Daejeon Regional Employment and Labor Office said it will use the special inspection to focus on checking safety management conditions across all rooms at the business site. Earlier, on the 1st of this month at the Hanwha Aerospace Daejeon business site, an explosion during cleaning of propellant residue from molds and manufacturing tools left five people dead and two injured.
A special inspection is conducted when two or more people die at the same time at a business site. A total of 43 personnel were deployed for this special inspection, including 21 labor inspectors and 22 from the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency.
The Daejeon Regional Employment and Labor Office said it will focus on whether key safety measures to prevent fires and explosions were implemented. It also plans to comprehensively check the overall level of safety management at the business site and compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act through interviews with on-site workers, including worker representatives. A joint inspection team will be formed with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the National Fire Agency, the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency to conduct safety checks on the management of military-use chemicals.
The ministry said, "We will order corporations to make improvements on issues that require immediate correction," adding, "We plan to take stern action, including imposing fines and pursuing criminal proceedings, for violations of the law."
