Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, said on the 29th, "To solve the memory supply shortage, we need to establish a new production base," adding, "We intend to invest 400 trillion won in the southwest region to create a new cluster that meets all the necessary conditions."
Chey said at a national briefing on the three mega projects held at the Blue House on the afternoon of the same day that he plans to invest 1,100 trillion won to expand semiconductor supply. Chey said, "SK hynix will bring forward and execute a 600 trillion won investment in Yongin to expand DRAM production and a 100 trillion won investment in Cheongju to expand NAND production," adding, "We intend to invest 400 trillion won in the southwest region to create a new cluster."
Chey also unveiled a plan to invest 1,000 trillion won in AI data centers. Chey said, "With SK Telecom at the center, we will build data centers with a total capacity of 15 gigawatts across regions," adding, "In phase one, we will split 5 gigawatts of AI data centers into 0.5 to 1 gigawatt units in various areas with power and land to build them as quickly as possible, and in phase two, we will sequentially expand AI data centers to 10 gigawatts."
Chey said, "Looking at the next 10 years, SK Group will execute more than 100 trillion won in domestic investment," adding, "We will build the future of AI in Korea."
