As demands for the resignation of People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok continue, centered on some factions in the party such as Alternative and Future, Jang signaled possible disciplinary action, saying that calls for the leadership to step down without grounds amount to party-disrupting behavior. He also said he would begin in earnest to resolve internal disciplinary matters that had been postponed until after the local elections.
On the morning of the 26th, Jang appeared on the Maeil Shinmun YouTube channel and, when asked about establishing discipline within the party, said, "I don't think this is a normal state," adding, "Before the local elections, we postponed various measures to avoid putting the party into a whirlpool of conflict, but now it is time to respond."
Jang also addressed criticism of the leadership from some quarters within the party, saying, "Demands for the leadership to resign without justification whenever the time comes have been taken as if they were reform or innovation," and emphasized, "Now this must be corrected." He added, "Shaking the leadership under the name of Alternative and Future is neither innovation nor reform."
Jang said, "This time, we need firm measures against irresponsible attempts to shake the leadership and actions that provoke internal conflict," adding, "If discipline is needed, we will review it thoroughly in terms of procedure and substance to prevent legal controversy as in the past."
Asked about his own position, Jang drew a line against stepping down, saying, "Any call for the resignation of a party leader elected by party members must align with the will of the members or have a clear justification," and, "Repeated resignation demands without justification are nothing more than individual politics."
He continued, "If you want to talk about leadership responsibility, you must first make your own position clear," criticizing, "It is not a responsible attitude to demand someone else's resignation while refusing to take responsibility yourself."
