Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said on the 25th that the government had "finalized the abolition of the prosecution's supplementary investigation authority as its basic position."
At Government Complex Seoul that day, Prime Minister Kim held a briefing on issues related to prosecution reform and said, "Rather than the government presenting a separate bill, we will respect the National Assembly's discussions and decisions," and stated accordingly.
Prime Minister Kim explained, "The basic principle of the prosecution reform pursued by the Lee Jae-myung administration is the separation of investigation and indictment," adding, "It is a core principle of reform to more rationally redefine the prosecution's authority and to more robustly protect the people's basic rights."
He said, "We will convey the government's basic position to the party and, thereafter, respect the National Assembly's discussions and decisions," adding, "We judged that it is desirable for the National Assembly, the representative body of the people, to make the decision after sufficient discussions on the specific institutional design and legislation."
Prime Minister Kim also explained the circumstances of handling the second reform package. He said, "While watching the process of handling the first reform package, we tried to handle the second reform package in May, earlier than the initial party-government agreement, but postponed it at the party's request." He added, "While organizing various views within the government, we judged that not submitting a separate government bill for the National Assembly's free discussions would be more efficient and desirable."
