This is the fourth defection case since the Lee Jae-myung administration launched. It is the second involving a soldier.
Earlier, on Oct. last year, one North Korean soldier crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) on the central front and expressed an intention to defect, and the military handed the person over to relevant agencies after taking custody.
In addition, one male resident crossed the MDL on the midwestern front on July 3 last year, and on the 31st of the same month another male resident was rescued south of the median line in the neutral waters of the Han River.
