Han Byeong-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 23rd that "for stable governance in the second year of the Lee Jae-myung administration and to restore people's livelihoods, the ruling party must continue to chair the Legislation and Judiciary Committee."
Han, the floor leader, said at a floor countermeasures meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, "The Democratic Party has no intention of wasting any more time over the Legislation and Judiciary Committee," adding, "We will make a decision, whether to allocate the standing committees according to the number of seats or to have the Democratic Party take responsibility for all standing committee chairmanships."
Han added, "We will swiftly wrap up forming the House to run a working National Assembly starting in July."
After the floor countermeasures meeting, floor spokesperson Lee Ju-hee met with reporters and said, "It is the firm position of the floor leadership to complete the formation of the House within this week," adding, "If necessary, we will also make a decision."
Lee, the floor spokesperson, said, "The National Assembly speaker requested the submission of the list of standing committees for the latter half by 12 p.m. on the 24th, and if the list is submitted within the deadline, we can open a plenary session tomorrow or the day after," adding, "If the list is not submitted, there was also mention that the speaker could allocate the standing committees by authority."
Referring to a Democratic Party workshop for lawmakers on July 3, Lee said, "To make it possible to discuss in concrete terms whether each member will carry out the work of their respective standing committee, we must complete the House formation procedures within this week."
